Zombies are a big deal in our modern society today, they are sold as toys, put on cereal boxes and even put in music videos. Zombies first began when man started to colonize and live together and when we became civilized enough to bury our dead. Ever since then stories of people rising back up from the dead have been a hot commodity. The type of zombie im going to be talking about in this paper are the zombies from the Michael Jackson video Thriller. Zombies have made a major leap from scary stories to ware they are today.
Throughout history zombies have been a thing of nightmares for most people and almost all colonies of people have a type of zombie. There are Tibetan zombies, Jamaican zombies and even Haitian zombies and all of them are different. But as America started to become more enlightened zombies moved away from scary stories and are now starting to be put into the real world. Like thriller for instance, zombies moved from a thing of nightmares to dancing in a music video.
The zombies in the music video Thriller look a lot scarier then zombies of the Haitian kind or zombies of Africa. The zombies in thriller look very decrepit and old. You can see a lot of their muscle and tenants and look as if they are falling apart. They also look very bluish as if they are lacking oxygen or not even breathing at all. They have torn clothes and clumps of dirt and soil embedded in there hair. They also have wounds on their face horrible teeth and pus leaking from every hole in their body.
I think these zombies look a lot like the zombies in dawn of the dead. In dawn of the dead, zombies from the grave come up to the surface and feast on the living, turning the living into more zombies. In dawn of the dead the zombies looked every similar and had the same characteristics. The zombies from thriller and the zombies from dawn of the dead both looked old, blue, decrepit, and very bloody and gory. Maybe he director of dawn of the dead saw the video thriller and wanted to duplicate the zombies. The way the zombies move in the Thriller video is very stiff and rigid.
They move extremely slow and shuffle their feet. They also walk with their arms straight out as if to show they are very stiff. Haitian zombies also move just like that. Haitian zombies move very slowly and still and stiff, Haitian zombies are believed to not be able to bend at the waste, so that is why Haitian people build their houses with low doors (so zombies can not get in). The only difference between the zombies in thriller and the Haitian zombies are that the zombies in thriller become very nimble when they dance.
They are not longer stiff and ridged and instead very agile and light on their feet. Haitian zombies do not dance at all. The director of thrillers main goal is to make money. The way he does that is by making a music video everyone would watch and getting more publicity for Michael Jackson. The reason he picked zombies to be in the music video is because he wanted his music video to be different then everyone else’s so people would watch it. Another reason he chooses to put zombies in his video is because he knew that zombies were becoming very popular.
The music video thriller was made in the 80’s and at that time spooky creature and things from the dead were on the rise. Putting zombies in your music video would absolutely get a big number of people to watch the music video and evidently make you money. Another reason the director was trying to make the music video so popular was because he was trying to get as many people as he can to listen to the song. If people listen to the song, that means they will buy the cd and make Michael Jackson money.
They did a really good job with that because the thriller album is one of the highest grossing albums of all time. The director of thriller chose to make the zombies look more scary and intimidating because he wanted the viewer to feel the fear that the main characters were feeling in the video. The director did not want you to feel bad for the zombies or laugh at them because you think they are funny. The director wanted you to feel scared when you saw them.
The way the director did that is that he made them look very old and torn up with blood and pus pouring from their bodies. The director also wanted the viewer to make a personal connection to the people being chased by the zombies. The director wanted to you to feel bad for the people and wanted you to imagine yourself in there shoes and feel their fear. The director wanted that to happen because the more engrossed you feel in the characters and the whole music video itself, the more the viewer will watch it and the more money the director and Michael Jackson will get.
